Glaziers navigate unique installation challenge
When we took on the glazing contract for this waterfront project
we added a safety boat and life jackets to our on-site equipment
list. While most glazing contractors are accustomed to enduring
hazardous weather, not many have also had to contend with the swelling
waves of the Atlantic Ocean under foot. The building’s proximity
to the harbour required glaziers to use a boat to transfer materials
to an overhanging swing stage.
However, the most challenging aspect of this project was the radius
sills required in the towers, some of which had depths of to 13
inches or more. With the help of our supplier/partners Kawneer
and Embury
a combination of extruded sill and three millimeter face sheet was
scribed, welded and painted in segments which were then precision
welded to make one big piece.
Because this was a casino, we had to use glass that would not permit
people to see into the building, so we installed a lot of tinted,
spandrel and reflective glass. We also supplied 33 doors for the
building, which is now a well-recognized landmark on the Halifax
waterfront.

Approximately 7700 square feet of glass was used
including 4700 square feet of spandrel, 4230 square feet of pedway
glazing and 2900 square feet of interior glazing.

The building’s proximity to the harbour required
glaziers to use a boat to transfer materials to an overhanging swing
stage.

AFG supplied the Sky on Green B2-30, six
millimeter heat-strengthened glass with reflective coating on the
second surface with an inner lite of clear annealed glass.
